Had a nice souvenir from Trooper Anderson of the Washington State Police.... Full Oppo drive post to come later. $156USD (one Canadian kidney) for 15mph over? Wow.
First time in my life I’ve ever been pulled over. For real.

that policeman is a killjoy

Ha damn , I just knew it would be in that area. Bellingham proper, around exit 252? That was a speedtrap way back when I was a student there 20 years ago.
I think they are forgiving up to 10 over, then all bets are off.

WSP are a compassionate bunch
That was sarcasm.

Yeah it drops from 70 to 60 and everyone is doing 80. Sometimes I’d see six cops.

I think that’s exactly where it was. I was in a clump, all going about the same speed but made the mistake of seeing him and instinctively braking.
My lights lit up and so did his.

Nah. I think you can contest it.
They filled out the form incorrectly. I mean look at the date they put down, it’s not June, doh .
Why does the police want to know whether you have mats, you have mats don’t you, they put down you haz no mats?

If I remember right, it goes from 70 to 60 around 242, but there are few places to run a trap, so many keep going 70+. I think a lot of enforcement is from exit 250 onward, closed to WWU, where you will have a lot of student and parent traffic - probably people more likely to just pay the speed tax.

Well I’ve been out of college for a few yeara but I’m 68% certain it happens at 252!!
![]() 10/07/2018 at 00:38 |

It happens - you got it over with . At least it wasn’t a bigger one :)
When I get into Bellingham, I seldom hit more than 10 over, and I keep an eye out.

Also, BC is a province, not a state. So many inaccuracies! Are you sure I was speeding?

Are you a fellow alum?
252 is the Samish Way/WWU exit - I remember it vividly as the fintail had a braking system issue there once (thankfully it is a long uphill exit). I think it changes to 60 just a little to the south

Did you explain that your Canadian and you don’t speed in MPH, you speed in KPH?
I thought they wrote BC thinking it was 2018 years Before Christ when they should of wrote AD.

My dad got a ticket last week. It was $200+ for 10 over.

Props to Washington for having cheap tickets. That fine would be twice as much in PA (note: the actual violation would only be like $40, but they get it up to $300 with fees somehow).

Ouch. Which state?
![]() 10/07/2018 at 13:06 |

Texas. He was going 45 in a 35. He was unfamiliar with the area and thought it was a 45. Was keeping with traffic. They just chose him

$10 per mile per hour over isn’t so bad. In college I think I got a ticket that was $250 or more for 15 over in Wisconsin but it was a long time ago...
![]() 10/07/2018 at 20:29 |

Yeah I was gonna say, this is a $400 ticket in California, before we even talk about insurance impacts...

You should just ignore it forever and then make them extradite you lol

I'm in WA lots though, my concern would be that they run my plates next time I'm down or something

And then you get caught with a warrant for your arrest. Just gotta make a run for the border at that point.

*sees flashing lights, downshifts*

It bears noting that WSP is known for being strict about speeds. Especially on congested roads where an accident can get worse, fast.
Just pay the ticket and mind the speed.
![]() 10/08/2018 at 14:45 |
|
Oh, I’ll pay it. No question that I was speeding. But the context is bs. As mentioned by others, it is in a section where it drops from 80 to 60. I got tagged at 75

When you respond to a car accident in your patrol district every other day for five years, you’ll become very humorless.
Especially if DUI is involved.
![]() 10/08/2018 at 15:04 |

Yeah, I know the context is BS. An important rule of thumb in Washington is that speed limits will always drop to 60 around urban, suburban and populated regions that receive a good amount of traffic.

Haha I live in Bham and work in Anacortes so that’s my daily commute. Cruising 85 in the left lane till it drops to 60 , and then I always ease off to flow of traffic in the right lane unless things are slow in which case 65-70 in the left. I’ve gotten lucky a few times but I drive a grey Tacoma which may as well be invisible in Washington State. Coincidentally I had the power brakes on my Range Rover fail right around there too. Except I live off the Iowa exit so that could’ve been reaaal bad if it wasn’t late at night. Took me the whole off ramp with both feet stamped on the pedal to stop it.
Idk the exit number, I am very good at directions and very bad at specific street names n numbers. I know a few coworkers with the same commute as me have gotten picked up right around there.
![]() 10/08/2018 at 20:11 |

That doesn’t sound like a fun commute. I’ve always loathed highway 20. If I recall right, the speedtraps would begin in earnest around exit 250 (Fairhaven) and be strong until exit 253 (Lakeway). Iowa is 254, and I remember it being a downhill exit - no fun with brake issues. Back when my old car had its issue, a line was leaking. I had 2-3 stops until the pedal would hit the floor. Luckily I was able to use the hill, and downshift to a stop, then top up the system to get a few more stops. I limped it home.
I remember when there used to be a junkyard at the Iowa exit, now the site of Wilson Toyota/MB. I moved there in 97 for school and remained for a few years after graduation, finally moving south for a better job market.

Eh. I’ve had much shorter distance ones in the Portland area that were more traffic heavy and I’d rather spend 40-50 minutes driving than sitting. But yeah, don’t want to do it forever either. I got a really good job opportunity at a software company in Anacortes(random as that is) but didn’t really want to live in Anacortes in my early 20s.
It’s not super steep and it’s at least long, not like Lakeway where you really need to get hauled down in a hurry. Range Rover Classics have this weird old-school power brake system where there’s a little pump that pressurizes a reservoir with nitrogen and then the pressurized nitrogen provides the braking force. So if the pump fails braking slowly gets harder and harder until you’ve got no power brakes at all(which with that system means almost no braking). Pump failed(or so I thought) but I didn’t know so much about the system at that point so the brake light came on, but the brakes felt fine so i kept on soldiering on up i5. Luckily it was night and the road was empty. When I got off the highway all of a sudden stiff pedal that did almost nothing.
Turned out the pump was fine but the fuse had somehow gotten loose(not blown) and lost contact? Dunno, that was a weird one but I got a new fuse that pushed in better and that fixed it. British cars man.

The drive would take 500% longer in Seattle metro, no doubt. The guide I claim here is 15mph - if you live 15 miles from work, budget an hour. It can be worse in the rain. I like Bellingham and would gladly live there if my Bellevue job and salary moved there. You can still pick up decent livable old houses for 300K or so, even with the college town inflation factor. Anacortes, I probably couldn’t do it, I think I’d get bored.
With all the possible quirks on a Classic, I have to imagine fuse-related brake failure is about 25th on the list. I’ve never heard of that specific failure on another car, that’s complexity for the sake of complexity that would please even the Germans.

Yeah, I moved up here for a job that was offering me towards the higher end of what I was hoping to make as an entry level software engineer, plus the company was more or less exactly what I wanted sizewise so I figured why not give it a shot . If/when I decide to move on it’s going to have to be Portland or Seattle , there’s really nothing in Bellingham if I was looking for a job here.
You know, it’s actually really little stuff you don’t expect more often then not. If you catch it little, it stays little. Most of the major stuff is pretty well engineered. Initial quality control was also an issue but if it’s made it this far initial quality was fine. But every month or two some random little seal or something needs done that I suppose my Toyota 4Runner I used to have of basically the same age/mileage must’ve also had but just never called attention to itself. If you fix the seal and prevent all the fluid that it’s supposed to be holding in from leaking out, the major part that needs said fluid will be fine.

Yeah, Bellingham has been that way for awhile. It’s hard to find a job that pays more than 50K or so a year there. I have a friend who I believe is a software engineer or something similar for a firm in Bellingham, but he started out almost 20 years ago.
Good point on a rig like that, if it is still on the road, most of the kinks have probably already been worked out.
